Season Glass is an extended debut play (EP) by South Korean girl group GFriend. The album was released by Source Music on January 15, 2015 and distributed by KT Music. The album contains three songs, including the single "Glass Bead", and two instrumental songs. The album peaked at number nine on the Gaon Album Album and has sold over 10,000 units. GFriend promoted the album with a series of live performances on television at a South Korean music event. Their debut is often compared to Girls' Generation's debut, with music and choreography "Glass Bead" reminiscent of "Into the New World".

Release and promotion

In November 2014, Source Music announced the debut of their upcoming first female group, named GFriend. On January 5, the entire group was unveiled and the release date of their album was announced. The music video for the lead single "Glass Bead" was produced by Zanybros and directed by Hong Won-ki. Gfriend is designed to target teen audience, and music videos are arranged in various school locations, including classrooms and gyms. "Glass Bead" is the first song in the group's "school series" and represents the beginning of the school term and enjoys time with friends.

GFriend promoted the album with "Glass Bead" performances at various music events, starting with Music Bank on January 16th. They present a "plain and youthful" image, dressed in cheerleader-inspired clothes with simple hairstyles and minimal makeup. Production and composition

The song intro album, "Glass Bead", and "White" was written by Iggy and Seo Yong-bae, who previously wrote songs such as Ailee's "Heaven" and Orange Caramel's "Catallena". Seo is an in-house producer at Rainbow Bridge World. "Neverland" was composed by Yoon Woo-seok from ZigZag Note and Kang Myeong-shin, with lyrics by Kim Seo-jun and Kim Yong-hwan (Eden Beatz).

"Glass Bead" is a bubblegum dance pop song, with "incredible string sounds, strong rhythms, and emotional and flowing melodies." The lyrics come from the perspective of a teenage girl, who says that she will not break easily despite looking as fragile as glass beads, and will shine for the person she loves. Originally, a different song, "softer", was set to be a single album. When the GFriend manager plays "Glass Bead" for the group, they all love it instantly. Sowon says it's "giving a nuance to run around in the gym, which I think fits better with us". Although the song is often compared to Girls' Generation's "Into the New World", it reminds groups of Fin.K.L and S.E.S. Korea from the late 1990s and early 2000s. "Neverland" is a dance song with strong "guitar" synths and guitars, featuring vocal harmonies in the choir, and "White" is a medium-tempo dance song reminiscent of the 1990s.

Reception

The album enters the weekly Gaon Album Chart at number twelve, and peaked at number nine in the second week of February. This is the 38th best-selling album during January, selling 1,146 physical copies. Until June 2016, it has sold a total of 11,640 units. "Glass Bead" entered the Gaon Digital Chart at number 89 and peaked at number 25 the following week. The song's music video is the most widely viewed K-pop music video globally during January.

At the end of January, GFriend is included in the Billing List ' list of "Top 5 K-Pop Artists to Watch in 2015". Jeff Benjamin said that GFriend, along with fellow rookie Lovelyz female group, is "leading a new wave of female acts with a plain classic look," in contrast to popular "sexy" trends of 2014.
