The ancient origins

One of the earliest appearances of the rosette in ancient art was at the beginning of the fourth millennium BC Egypt. The other Mediterranean appearance of the rosette design comes from Minoan Crete; Among other places, the design appears on the Phaistos Disc, which is restored from the eponymous archaeological site in southern Crete.

The modern usage

Formalized floral motifs are often carved in stone or wood to create decorative ornaments for architecture and furniture, and in metalworking, jewelry design and applied art to form decorative borders or at the intersection of two materials.

Rosette decor has been used for formal military awards. They also appear in modern civilian attire, and are often used prominently in political or sporting events. Roses are several times adorned with musical instruments, such as around the earpiece of the guitar.
