Plot

In 1987, an 8-year-old boy in Santa Cruz, California, Jay Moriarity, was rescued from drowning by his next-door neighbor, surfer Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler). It ignites her passion for sports.

One morning, Jay (Jonny Weston), now 15, saw Frosty leave early and ride in his van. He saw Frosty and his three friends riding giant waves known as the Mavericks, which with El Nià ± o coming to peak within three months.

Reluctantly, Frosty agreed to teach Jay how to surf the Mavericks, but insisted that Jay learned about "the pillars of the surfing foundation". This involved him learning to pedal a 36-mile board in Monterey Bay (from Santa Cruz to Monterey), stepping on water for 40 minutes and able to hold his breath for four minutes.

During the training, Frosty encouraged Jay to write an essay to focus on the task. His first essay was about Kim (Leven Rambin), his lover, whose dog he saved when he was 8 years old, which caused him to nearly drown. Jay gets closer to Kim as he practices, partly driven by Frosty's wife, Brenda (Abigail Spencer). A few weeks before the biggest wave of season hits the Mavericks, Brenda suffered a stroke and died.

A few days later, desperate for Brenda's death, Frosty pedaled into the bay. Jay followed him, and using his knowledge of his training, he helped Frosty return to shore. Frosty realizes that Jay is ready to ride the Mavericks. Frosty took Jay to the Mavericks at Half Moon Bay and watched with three of his friends as Jay treaded water against the tide. The Group agrees that Jay is ready to ride them.

For Jay's 16th birthday on June 15, 1994, his mother (Elisabeth Shue) gave him a radio so he could listen to the weather and track the waves. Frosty gave him a custom-made "big wave weapon" (long surfboards specially designed for riding large waves). Kim expresses her feelings to her and they share a kiss.

Frosty wanted to keep the Mavericks secret, but Jay's notebook he used for preparation ended in the hands of his rival Sonny (Taylor Handley). When Jay and Frosty go to Half Moon Bay, there are many people and boats take surfers out.

Many newcomers delete before getting to surf Mavericks. Jay removes at first, but then takes the board and manages up the Mavericks. A title card reveals that he married Kim and died at the age of 22 years while diving freely in the Maldives. The film ends with Frosty, Kim, and a collection of other people who hold a surf burial ceremony for Jay.
