A tamatebako ( ??? ) "jewel box", "jewel box" , "jewel box", "treasure box", "coffin", etc., is the mysterious box name that existed in Japanese folklore "Urashima Tar?", a farewell gift filed by Urashima Tar fisherman? received from the lady of the sea (Otohime), after she stayed at the Dragon Palace (or Hârai), which she invited after storing the turtles.

Etymology and aliases

tamatebako is literally translated "jewel-hand-box" but sometimes does not seem to instill a special meaning and is translated as "coffin". It was polished as a "pretty box" by McKeon.

The first example of its use is the story of Urashima in a poem inserted in Otogiz? Shi . And there seems to be double entender words because first can mean "gem" or "soul".

This box is also referred to as katami no hako ( ?????? ) "keepsake box" in < i> Otogiz? Shi text.

The modern version

The tamatebako appears in the story "Urashima Tar?", The modern version is generally based on national textbooks. Told that Urashima Tar? the fisherman was invited to the sea palace (Ry? g or the Dragon Palace) by the princess (Otohime) after saving the tortoise. He spends several days, is fed and comforted and after he goes to receive the takoebako ("treasure box") with explicit instructions to never open the box. When he returned, his parents had died and he did not know anyone. Anxiously he forgot the princess's warning. When he opened the tariqa, white smoke came out, and he turned into a white-haired old man.

It is understood during the short time he spends in the Dragon Palace, many years have passed in the world back home. Otohime has saved his old age in the school, the Urashima Tar? released.

Seki variant

three-tiered jeweled hand-box ( ??????? , mikasane no tamatebako ) given to Urashima Tar? and the princess really encourages her to use it when needed. This is what happens to the "Urashima Taro" variant collected by Keigo Seki, a spokesman for Nakatado District, Kagawa.

When he opened the lid, the first box contained a crane feather; the second box pulled out a cloud of white smoke that turned itself into an old man; the third box holds a mirror for him to see himself. The feather from the first box then tied itself to his back, now turning Urashima into a crane, and the princess comes up with a turtle's disguise to see it.

The version with "Tamatebako" three-story (handmade gem) was also published in English by the Japanese foreign ministry in 1969.

This box is referred to as tamakushige ( ???/?? ) "comb box" in the precursor story, recorded as history in Fudoki Tango Province, where the main character is known by a slightly different name, Ura-no-Shimako, and the woman identifies himself as an immortal member.

Shimako's visit to Horaisan (Mount Penglai) or "Tokoyo-no-kuni" ("Immortal Land" or "Land of Eternity") lasted for three years, which he eventually gave a box as a gift.

Poems and expressions

In some Otogiz texts? Shi of Urashima Tar? inserted a poem waka which is the cornerstone to Urashima:

Kimi ni au yo wa urashima ga tamatebako akete kuyashiki waga namida kana ( ???????????? ??????????? )
"The night met you [like] Urashima opened tametebako, [when night turned into dawn] regret and my tears".

" akete kuyashiki " in the poem might be restated as "embarrassed by the opening" of the box.

The poem gives rise to a common phrase akete kuyashiki tamatebako ( ???????? ) "opened for remorse (mortification ), tamatebako ".
