Cordura is a collection of cloth technology used in a variety of products including luggage, backpacks, trousers, military clothing and performance clothing. Cordura fabric is known for its durability and resistance to abrasions, tears and shows.

Originally developed and registered as a trademark by E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) in 1929, now belongs to INVISTA (a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries). Cordura fabrics are usually made of nylon, but can be mixed with cotton or other natural fibers.

Overview

DuPont originally introduced the fabric as a rayon type. This product was developed further during World War II and was used by the military in tires. In 1966, when a new formulation of nylon proved superior, the Cordura brand name was transferred to a nylon product instead. In 1977 researchers discovered a process for coloring Cordura, which opened up a wide range of commercial applications. In 1979, the gentle Cordura suitcase had captured about 40 percent of the baggage market. Some of the classic brands that remain popular today continue to use Cordura fabrics in their products. Eastpak is the first brand to use Cordura fabrics in their packaging, while JanSport uses nylon like canvas in their original daypack bag in 1970 and continues to use it today. In the 1980s Manhattan Portage began using 1000D Cordura Nylon in their bags. In the 1990s, European clothing brands adopted 1000D and 500D fabrics for reinforcements. Clothing brands such as F. Engel, Kansas Fristads, Snickers, and Scruffs use fabrics. Cordura is also used today in most motorcycle jackets and medium to high class textile shorts due to its high abrasion resistance. It is found in motorcycle equipment made by companies such as Klim, Rukka, MotoPort, Rev'It, Olympia, AeroStich, and Dainese.

Cordura fabrics are available in a variety of construction, weight and aesthetics, including versions designed specifically for tear resistance and color retention. There are also baselayer, denim and canvas fabric containing a mixture of Invista fiber and cotton 420 nylon 6.6, known as Cordura Baselayer, Cordura Denim, and Cordura Duck. The Cordura Naturalle fabric collection, based on a full dull thread technology, is designed to look more like the look and feel of cotton. Cordura Naturelle fabric is available in knitted and woven fabrics, with and without stretching and special lamination and finishing touches.

Some Cordura fabrics have been designed specifically for military outdoor use and expanded. Cordura fabrics have a long-standing military heritage (over 45 years), and many US military fabric specifications are based on the Cordura brand specifications.

Invista continues to develop new fabrics under the Cordura brand.
