The Xeros Washing Machine is a new type of laundry technology that cleans clothing using primary nylon polymer granules and less water. The engine releases nylon polymer beads into the main compartment where the wash is washed. These little beads and super absorbers allow them to pass through the clothes to absorb dirt and stains. The technology was created by Leeds University professor Stephen Burkinshaw, who currently has a partnership with Xeros Ltd. in perfecting this technology.

Technology

The washing machine cleans using nylon polymer beads and one tenth of the water used by traditional washing machines. Instead of cleaning clothes with water, the machine uses a reusable nylon for the cleaning process. The nylon polymer beads are more absorbent than water, allowing them to absorb stains right into their core.

Washing machines create moist conditions in the clothes compartment. This process causes the polymer chains in the nylon to separate slightly, making the beads absorb. The beads then absorb and lock the stain on their core.

Process

First, the laundry is loaded into the engine compartment. The machine then releases nylon and water polymer beads containing detergent into the garment. The washing cycle begins and the beads begin to absorb the stain. After the cycle ends, the nylon polymer beads are then separated by the drum in the projected drum separation process to remove 99.95% of the beads; the remaining beads can be removed or removed using a vacuum stick (included with the purchase of the machine).

Inventor/Developer

The washing machine system is based on Professor Stephen Burkinshaw's research. Burkinshaw spends his time at the University of Leeds focusing on the structure of nylon polymer beads. He found that nylon was the best material for absorbing small particles, and together with his research team came up with the concept of using nylon beads to remove stains from clothing.

Professor Stephen Burkinshaw and his research team are currently working with Xeros Ltd. and plans to produce commercially available waterless washing machines by the end of 2011.

Environmental and Energy Cost

According to Xeros Ltd., the technology uses 90% less water than conventional washing machines. While front-loading washing machines use about 20-25 gallons of water, Xeros washing machines are estimated to use only one gallon of water.

This machine is also projected to save consumers up to 30% for operating costs in electricity and water.

Although this device saves on operating costs, compared to other washing machines, the initial retail price of the machine is still unknown and may exceed the operating costs saved during the lifetime of the product.
