In 1956, the US states and Canadian provinces reached agreement with the American Association of Vehicle Vehicle Administrators, the Association of Car Manufacturers and the National Safety Council that standardized the size for vehicle license plate (except for motorcycles) at 6 inches (15 cm ) with a width of 12 inches (30 cm), with standard mounting holes. 1955 (dated 1956) is the first Michigan number plate to meet this standard.
