Histori

In 1906, the residents of Fort Bragg established the official water dump behind Union Lumber Company to what is now known as "Site 1". Most water-ridden communities have dumps that dispose of glass, equipment, and even vehicles. Locals call it "The Dumps." Fires are often lit to reduce the size of the waste pile.

When the original dump site was filled in 1943, the site was moved to what is now known as "Site 2", an active disposal site from 1943 to 1949.

When the beach was filled in 1949, the dump was moved northward to what is now known as "Glass Beach", which remained an active exhaust site until 1967.

The State Water Resources Control Board of California and city leaders closed this area in 1967. Cleaning programs were carried out over the years to repair the damage. Over the next few decades, what is biodegradable in degraded dumps and all other metals and items is finally removed and sold as scrap or used in art. Waves crashed glass and pottery and dropped the pieces into small, delicate, colored pieces that often became the quality of jewelry and that covered Glass Beach and two other glass (ex-dump) beaches at Fort Bragg.

There are three sites of Glass Beach at Fort Bragg dumpster dumped into the sea between 1906 and 1967. Site Two (1943-1949) and Three (1949-1967 - "Glass Beach") is located at the end of the road starting at the corner of Elm Street and Glass Beach Drive. These sites are accessible on foot and with a short climb on the cliffs around the beach. Site One (1906-43) is 1/4 mile south of Site Two and has been accessible on foot in January 2015 when the northern part of the new Coastal Trail at Fort Bragg opened.

In 1998, private property owners started a five-year process working with the California Coastal Conservancy and California's Integrated Waste Management Agency for the cleaning and selling of property to the state. Upon completion of the cleanup, the California Department of Parks and Recreation purchased a 38 hectare (15 hectare) Glass Beach property, and it was incorporated into MacKerricher State Park in October 2002.

Mostly "Glass Beach", Site 3, "adjacent" with MacKerricher State Park. All entities in California end up on the average high water mark (MHW), according to Article 10 of the state constitution. At Fort Bragg, the average water height is 5.2 ', and most of Glass Beach is under that watermark.

Sites 1 & amp; 2 is located south of "Glass Beach" and is not adjacent to the state park area, although they are adjacent to the new city park area, which also ends at the average high water mark (MHW).

Tourism

This beach is now visited by tens of thousands of tourists every year. Collecting is not recommended in the "Glass Beach" section inside and adjacent to the state park, although most of the glass is now found on two other glass beaches outside the state park area.

Around 1,000 to 1,200 tourists visit Fort Bragg's glass shores every day in the summer. Some collect glasses. Due to this and also due to the natural factor (wave action continues to roll over the glass), the glass slowly decreases. There is currently a movement by Captain J.H. (Cass) Forrington to refill the beach with discarded glass. On December 10, 2012, City Council Fort Bragg discussed the depletion of coastal glass and refused to move forward with charging efforts because of the cost and perceived likelihood that the required permits would not be approved.

Similar beaches are found in Benicia, California, and Eleele, Hawaii.
