Samsung entered the electronics industry in the late 1960s and the construction and shipbuilding industry in the mid-1970s; these areas will encourage further growth. After Lee's death in 1987, Samsung separated into four business groups - the Samsung Group, the Shinsegae Group, the CJ Group and the Hansol Group. History

1938 to 1970

In 1938, Lee Byung-chul (1910-1987) from the family of a large landowner in the Uiryeong region moved to nearby Daegu town and founded Samsung Sanghoe (????, ????). Samsung started as a small trading company with forty employees located in Su-dong (now Ingyo-dong). It deals with dried fish, local groceries and noodles. The company prospered and Lee moved his headquarters to Seoul in 1947. When the Korean War broke out, he was forced to leave Seoul. He started a sugar refinery in Busan called Cheil Jedang . In 1954 Lee established the Cheil Mojik and built a factory in Chimsan-dong, Daegu. It is the largest wool mill ever in this country.

Samsung diversified into various fields. Lee sought to establish Samsung as a leader in various industries. Samsung moved into business lines such as insurance, securities and retail.

In 1947, Cho Hong-jai, founder of Hyosung Group, jointly invested in a new company called Samsung Mulsan Gongsa, or Samsung Trading Corporation, with founder Samsung Lee Byung-chull. The trading company grew into Samsung C & amp; T Corporation at present. After several years, Cho and Lee parted because of the different management styles. Cho wants 30 equity shares. Samsung Group is separated into Samsung Group and Hyosung Group, Hankook Tire and other businesses.

In the late 1960s, Samsung Group entered the electronics industry. It forms several electronics-related divisions, such as Samsung Electronics Devices, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung Corning and Samsung Semiconductor & amp; Telecommunication, and making facilities in Suwon. The first product is a set of black and white television.

1970 to 1990

In 1980, Samsung acquired the Hangen-based Gumi Hanguk Jeonja Tongsin and entered the telecommunication hardware. The product was originally a switchboard. The facility was developed into a telephone and fax manufacturing system and became the center of Samsung mobile phone manufacturing. They have generated more than 800 million mobile phones to date. The company grouped them together under Samsung Electronics in the 1980s.

After Lee, the founder's death in 1987, Samsung Group was separated into four business groups - the Samsung Group, the Shinsegae Group, the CJ Group and the Hansol Group. Shinsegae (discount store, department store) was originally part of the Samsung Group, separated in the 1990s from the Samsung Group along with CJ Group (Food/Chemicals/Entertainment/logistics), and Hansol Group (Paper/Telecom). Today these separate groups are independent and they are not part of or connected with Samsung Group. A representative of Hansol Group said, "Only people who do not know about the laws governing the business world can believe something very unreasonable", adds, "When Hansol split from the Samsung Group in 1991, he decided on all payment guarantees and holds shares with Samsung affiliates. "One source of the Hansol Group affirmed," Hansol, Shinsegae, and CJ have been under independent management since their separation from the Samsung Group ". One Shinsegae department store executive director said, "Shinsegae does not have a payment guarantee associated with Samsung Group".

In the 1980s, Samsung Electronics began investing heavily in research and development, a very important investment in pushing the company to become a leader in the global electronics industry. In 1982, he built a television assembly plant in Portugal; in 1984, a factory in New York; in 1985, a factory in Tokyo; in 1987, a facility in England; and other facilities in Austin, Texas, in 1996. By 2012, Samsung has invested more than US $ 13,000,000,000 at the Austin facility, which operates under the name Samsung Austin Semiconductor. This makes Austin the largest foreign investment location in Texas and one of the largest single foreign investment in the United States.

1990 to 2000

Samsung began to rise as an international company in the 1990s. The construction branch of Samsung was awarded a contract to build one of two Petronas Towers in Malaysia, Taipei 101 in Taiwan and Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates. In 1993, Lee Kun-hee sold ten of Samsung Group's subsidiaries, streamlined the company, and combined other operations to concentrate on three industries: electronics, engineering, and chemicals. In 1996, the Samsung Group rebuilt the foundations of Sungkyunkwan University.

Samsung became the world's largest memory chip manufacturer in 1992 and is the world's second-largest chipmaker after Intel (see the 20th Worldwide Semiconductor Stock Market by Year). In 1995, he created the first liquid crystal display. Ten years later, Samsung grew into the largest manufacturer of liquid crystal display panels in the world. Sony, which did not invest in large-size TFT-LCDs, contacted Samsung to cooperate, and, in 2006, S-LCD was established as a joint venture between Samsung and Sony to provide a stable supply of LCD panels for both manufacturers. S-LCD is owned by Samsung (50% plus one share) and Sony (50% minus one share) and operates its plant and facilities in Tangjung, South Korea. On December 26, 2011, it was announced that Samsung has acquired Sony shares in this joint venture.

Compared to other major Korean companies, Samsung survived the relatively unharmed 1997 Asian financial crisis. However, Samsung Motor sold to Renault with significant losses. In 2010, Renault Samsung is 80.1 percent owned by Renault and 19.9 percent owned by Samsung. In addition, Samsung produced various aircraft from the 1980s to the 1990s. The company was founded in 1999 as Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the result of a merger between three major domestic aerospace divisions of Samsung Aerospace, Daewoo Heavy Industries and Hyundai Space and Aircraft Company. However, Samsung is still producing aircraft engines and gas turbines.

Samsung denounced the decision saying that the move could jeopardize innovation in the sector. It also follows South Korea's decision that both companies are guilty of infringing their intellectual property. In the first trading after the ruling, Samsung shares on the Kospi index fell 7.7%, the biggest decline since October 24, 2008, to 1.177 million Korean won. Controversy

Financial scandal

In 2007, Samsung's former chief lawyer Kim Yong Chul claimed he was involved in bribing and fabricating evidence on behalf of the group's chairman, Lee Kun-hee and the company. Kim said that Samsung's lawyers are training executives to serve as scapegoats in a "fake scenario" to protect Lee, even though the executives are not involved. Kim also told the media that he was "sidelined" by Samsung after he refused to pay a $ 3.3 million bribe to a US Federal District Court judge prosecuting a case in which two of their executives were found guilty on charges related to memory chip pricing. Kim revealed that the company has collected large amounts of secret funds through illegally opened bank accounts under the name of up to 1,000 Samsung executives - in its own name, four accounts opened to manage 5 billion won.

Anti-trust worries

"You can even say the chairman of Samsung is stronger than the President of South Korea. [South] Koreans have regarded Samsung as unbeatable and above the law," said Woo Suk-hoon, the economic podcast host popular in the Washington Post article titled "In South Korea, the Republic of Samsung", was published on December 9, 2012. Critics claim that Samsung knocked out smaller businesses, limited options for South Korean consumers, and sometimes colluded with fellow giants to fix prices while harassing them who are investigating. Lee Jung-hee, South Korean presidential candidate, said in a debate, "Samsung has a government in its hands, Samsung runs the world of law, the press, academia and bureaucracy".

Viral marketing

The Fair Trade Commission of Taiwan is investigating Samsung and Taiwan's local advertising agency for false advertising. The case began after the Commission received a complaint stating that the agency hired students to attack Samsung Electronics competitors in online forums. Samsung Taiwan made the announcement on its Facebook page stating that it did not interfere with the evaluation report and has suspended an online marketing campaign that is posting or responding to content in online forums.

Employment violations

Samsung has been the subject of several complaints about child labor in its supply chain from 2012 to 2015.

In July 2014, Samsung cut its contract with Shinyang Electronics after receiving complaints about companies violating child labor laws. Samsung said that his investigation found evidence of Shinyang using underage workers and that it severed the relationship immediately according to the "zero tolerance" policy for child labor violations.

One of Samsung's Chinese suppliers, HEG, was criticized for using minors by China Labor Watch (CLW) in July 2014. HEG denies the allegations and has demanded China Labor Watch.

CLW issued a statement in August 2014 claiming that HEG employed more than ten children under the age of 16 at a plant in Huizhou, Guangdong. The group said the youngest child identified was 14 years old. Samsung said it was conducting on-site investigations into production lines that included one-on-one interviews but found no evidence of child labor being used. CLW responded that HEG had fired the workers described in the statement before the Samsung investigators arrived.

CLW also claims that HEG violates overtime regulations for adult workers. CLW says a female student only pays her standard wage despite working overtime for four hours per day even though Chinese law requires a salary of 1.5 to 2.0 times the standard wage.

Price settings

On October 19, 2011, the Samsung company was fined EUR145,727,000 for being part of a ten-company price cartel for DRAM that runs from 1 July 1998 to 15 June 2002. The company accepts, like most other cartel members, a 10% reduction to acknowledge the facts to the investigator. Samsung had to pay 90% of their share of the settlement, but Micron avoided payment as a result of initially disclosing the case to the researchers.

In Canada, during 1999, several manufacturers of DRAM micro chips conspired to set prices, among the accused including Samsung. A price fix was investigated in 2002. The recession began to occur that year, and the pricing was over; However, by 2014, the Canadian government reopens the case and deliberately investigates. Sufficient evidence was found and presented to Samsung and two other manufacturers during a class action lawsuit trial. The companies approved a $ 120 million deal, with $ 40 million in fines, and $ 80 million to be paid back to Canadians who bought computers, printers, MP3 players, game consoles or cameras from April 1999 through June 2002.
