Molding (also spelled molding in the United States although usually not in the industry), also known as coving (Great Britain, Australia) ) , is a strip of material with various profiles used to cover transitions between surfaces or for decoration. These are traditionally made of solid mill or plaster, but may be from reformed plastic or wood. In classical architecture and sculpture, prints are often carved in marble or other stones.

The "plain" print has a top and bottom angle. The "sprout" print has a top and bottom edge that tilts backward, allowing the installation between two non-parallel planes (such as walls and ceiling), with open space at the rear.

Decorative prints have been made of wood, stone and cement. Molds have recently been made from extruded PVC and Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) as a core with a cement-based protective layer. Synthetic prints have environmental, health and safety issues investigated by Doroudiani et al .

The simplest, the mold hides and helps seal the natural connection seals generated in the process of framing the building structure. As decorative elements, they are the means of applying bright and dark lines shaded to structural objects without having to change materials or apply pigments. Depending on their function, they may be primarily concealment or sealing joint, unadorned decorative, or some combination of the three.

As a contrasting decorative element dark and bright areas define the object. Imagine the vertical surface of a sunlit wall with an angle of about 45 degrees above the wall. Adding a small horizontal mold protruding to the surface of the wall introduces dark horizontal shadows under the mold, called the fillet mold. Adding a vertical fillet to the horizontal surface creates a light vertical shadow. Graded shadings are made possible by using molds in various forms: concave caving cavetto produces darker horizontal shadows on the top and brighter at the bottom; ovolo (convex) prints create lighter shadows on the top and darker at the bottom. Other varieties of concave casting are scotia and congÃÆ' Â © and other convex prints echinus , torus and astragal.

Placing the ovolo directly above the cavetto forms a curved shaped s with a vertical end called the ogee or cyma reversa . His shadow appears as a band light on the top and bottom but dark in the interior. Likewise, cavetto above ovolo forms s with a horizontal edge, called cyma or cyma recta . Her shadow shows two dark lines with a bright interior.

Together with the basic elements and their variants form a decorative vocabulary that can be assembled and reassembled in endless combinations. This vocabulary is the core of classical architecture and Gothic architecture.
