Reception
Kodocha won the Kodansha Manga Award for best manga in 1998. Jason Thompson found the manga "very strange [...] with nice lines and cute details", calling the ancient art. Holly Kolodziejczak of Animefringe praised this series for its elements such as the mystery and romance that make up a powerful comedy. In addition, like Thompson, he finds artistic quality even when his time is old. Dillon Font from the same site calls it "a very dense part of the manga collection." The reviewers compared it to the anime adaptation "deeply missed the crazy quirkiness that the direction of Daichi's anime's director was injected into an anime series" that might leave the manga "boring." Allen Divers of the Anime News Network recommends it to readers to comment that this is "a solid story about a young young girl who keeps entertaining along the way"
The anime adaptation also received praise with THEIR Anime Reviews' Carlos Ross who claimed "a comedy frenzy was the selling point of this anime, and sold it." Zac Bertschy from Anime News Network praises the characters as being liked and likes animation and music. Reviewing the DVD series 10, Carl Kimlinger from the same website with Bertschy said that while "both show and Sana have slowed down a bit in forty episodes" the material is not as interesting as the previous episode.
