Histori
When the Franciscan missionaries arrived in Guatemala from Spain in 1530 they were assigned to 120 villages by civil authorities. They were the first to move to the Panchoy Valley in 1541 where they built a church on the site of the Christ School today ( Escuela de Cristo ). The chapel was severely damaged in 1565 and over the next ten years donations were collected to build a new sanctuary located two blocks in 1579. Part of this construction, perhaps the only one in Antigua dating from the 16th century, can be appreciated in one side of today's sanctuary. San Francisco el Grande becomes a significant religious and cultural center for the whole region. Theology, law, philosophy, physics and mathematics are taught at San Buenaventury College, located in the ruins of today's monasteries. The college also favored painters from the colonial era such as CristÃÆ'óbal de Villalpando, Thomas de Merlo and Alonzo de la Paz.
The chapels and monastery were expanded during the 17th century. In 1684 the structure was reinforced and withstood the 1691 earthquake. The church itself was built by Diego de Porres and was inaugurated in 1702. The 1717 earthquake damaged its severe structure. So did the earthquake of 1751. The site was partially destroyed during the 1773 quake and has been reconstructed in some parts but the debris areas still exist. The fountain of the main corridor was brought to the atrium of La Merced in 1944. The colonial image of the Virgin lying behind the main altar fell in the 1976 earthquake.

Architecture
Its facade, with twisted salomic columns, is typical of the Spanish-American baroque and is similar to the San Jose Cathedral. It has sixteen domed niches, each but the two lowest containing saints or monks. These include Virgin Mary, San Diego de AlcalÃÆ'á, San Antonio de Padua, San Juan Capistrano, Santa Clara, Santiago, and Santa Isabel of Hungary. At the entrance of the monastery there are several murals, where a few Franciscan friars can be seen with skeletons.
The clock and clock tower of the 17th and 19th centuries remained ruins.
The altarpieces inside the church are decorated with paintings and statues of famous contemporary artists.
The Church marks the beginning of Calle los Pasos ( Steps Street ) which holds the Stations of the Cross and is used to run solemnly.
Peter from Saint Joseph Betancur
Peter of Saint Joseph Betancur, a Guatemalan missionary from Guatemala, who was beatified in 1980 and canonized in 2002, was immortalized on the site. His grave is visited by thousands of pilgrims each year for help and miracles.
In movie
In 1935, the ruins of San Francisco - which were not rebuilt until 1967 - were used to film some scenes in the film The New Adventures of Tarzan, in particular where Tarzan and his crew were captured by the Green Goddess worshipers and would be sacrificed. The filming took place entirely on location in Guatemala and was also made in Chichicastenango, Livingston, Puerto Barrios, RÃÆ'o Dulce, Tikal, QuiriguÃÆ'á and Guatemala City
