Method
Abrasive blasting is the process of influencing projectiles such as sand or plastic grains to erode the surface material. If the abrasive media hardness is higher than the substrate, the substrate surface may be damaged. Ice blasting is a non-abrasive cleaning process that uses frozen water particles as a smoothing medium on impact to prevent damage to the substrate. The most effective blasting ice-cleaning application uses consistent-sized particles to provide a uniform cleaning effect. The ice particles are combined with compressed air and directed to the surface.
The cleaning method used in ice blasting falls under three steps:
- Bulk Deletes: The stage at which the primary contamination is removed first. Usually this is physical removal with displacement (ie the transfer of Momentum). The solids have better momentum displacements than liquids because they do not flow around the inherent contamination.

This leads to the natural conclusion that the icy particles that change the state from solid to liquid at normal working temperatures are ideal for cleaning applications where strict hygiene is required and at the same time the use of cleaning chemicals is undesirable. The ice particles provide impact cleaning before the phase change, which then rubs and removes contaminants, which can be easily collected and removed. The ice particles will melt into the water and some of the water will experience forced evaporation arising from the explosion air movement. In warm climates, complete evaporation can occur, leaving only wet blast debris. This aspect of ice is very attractive to those concerned with the generation and disposal of waste, especially in the cleaning of hazardous chemicals. Minimization of waste is also important for the cleaning of industrial spaces where floor channels are not common.

Coulson Ice Blast's new IceStorm90 contains an ice crusher inside the machine, allowing users to insert ice into the jaw crusher. The jaw-crushing mechanism then breaks the ice into particles slightly smaller than a grain of rice, which is then destroyed through a nozzle with an operating pressure of 80PSI-150PSI depending on the application. The feed rate on the engine can be adjusted from 0-5 pounds of ice per minute with up to 150 feet blasting hose.

Rust
Ice blast is not abrasive. It does not remove the hard coat attached strongly as the media will be abrasive. However, ice explosions can eliminate coating with weakened adhesion due to coating or corrosion defects. As the ice particles impact on the layer, it causes pressure press on the layer and the target system. On impact, ice particles melt. The layers and target system under pressure press will react in the opposite direction, producing a tensile stress. When the tensile stress exceeds the adhesion strength of the layer, there is the removal of the layer. The raised layer is within the strength of the chip and will be carried by the waste water.

Security
As with all blasting technologies, proper sunglasses and ear protection are recommended, as the blasting machine reaches the level of 115 db. Depending on the contaminants being cleared, the level of protection varies. Ice blasting is the safest method for blasting technology because of the lack of air pollution that is consistent with other blasting technologies. Generally, light rain equipment is adequate protection. If ice blasting is used to clean hazardous materials, heavier protective clothing is recommended.
