Meteoric iron - Wikipedia

Meteoric iron , sometimes meteorite iron , is an original metal found in meteorites and made of iron and nickel elements primarily in the form of kamacite and taenite mineral phases. Meteoric iron forms most of the iron meteorite but is also found in other meteorites. Apart from a small amount of telluric iron, meteoric iron is the only natural native metal of iron element on the surface of the Earth.

Mineralogi

Most of the meteoric iron consists of taenite and kamacite. Taenite is a cube centered on the face and kamacite is the central part of the body of iron-nickel-alloy.

Meteoric iron can be distinguished from telluric iron by its microstructure and possibly by its chemical composition as well, because meteorite iron contains more nickel and less carbon.

Trace amounts of gallium and germanium in meteoric iron can be used to distinguish different types of meteorites. Meteoric iron in rocky meteorite is identical to the "gallium-germanium group" of iron meteorites.

Structure

Meteoric iron forms several different structures that can be seen by etching or in thin sections of meteorites. WidmanstÃÆ'¤tten pattern is formed when meteoric iron cools and kamacite is released from taenite in lamellas form. Plessite is the finer intergrowth of two minerals among the lamella of the WidmanstÃÆ'¤tten pattern. The Neumann line is the fine lines that flow through the kamacite crystals that are formed through impact-related deformations.

Cultural and historical usage

Before the advent of iron smelting, meteoric iron was the only source of ferric aside from a small amount of telluric iron. Meteoric iron was used before the start of the iron age to create cultural objects, tools and weapons.

Bronze Age

Many examples of iron working from the Bronze Age have been ascertained from meteorites.

  • In ancient Egypt iron metal beads were found in graves near Gerzeh containing 7.5% Ni. Aged around 3200 BC, the geochemical analysis of Gerzeh's iron beads, based on the ratio of nickel to iron and cobalt, confirms that the iron came from meteorites.
  • Approximately 2500 BC, the iron knife of Alaca HÃÆ'¶yÃÆ'¼k in Turkey is confirmed as a meteorite in origin through geochemical analysis.
  • Approximately 2300 BC, an iron pendant from Umm el-Marra in Syria was confirmed as a meteorite in its origin through geochemical analysis.
  • Approximately 1400 BC, an iron ax from Ugarit in Syria was found to be from a meteorite.
  • Approximately 1400 BC, some iron axes from the Shang Dynasty in China were also confirmed to come from meteorites.
  • Approximately 1350 BC, an iron dagger, bracelet, and headrest from Tutankhamun's tomb were confirmed to have come from a meteorite. Tutankhamun's daggers consist of the same proportions of metal (iron, nickel and cobalt) to meteorites found in the area, stored by ancient meteor showers.

The Americas

  • The Inuit tribe uses the Cape York meteorite section to create a lance head.

Africa

  • Fragments of Gibeon meteorites were used for centuries by Namibian Names.

Asia

  • There are reports of meteorite use for the manufacture of various goods in Tibet (see Thokcha).
  • The Iron Man , Vai statue? rava? carved from an iron meteorite., a recognized Tibetan Buddha statue, Iron Man, possibly carved from an ataxite meteorite. It has been speculated that it can be made from Chinga meteorite fragments.

Even after the invention of smelting, meteoric iron is sometimes used where this technology is not available or rare metals. A piece of Cranbourne meteorite was made into a horseshoe around 1854.

Meteorite iron is currently used in the production of jewelry and knives, but is mostly used for research, education, or collection purposes.

The atmospheric phenomenon

Meteoric iron also has an effect on Earth's atmosphere. When the meteorite descends through the atmosphere, its outer parts blur. Meteoric ablation is the source of many elements in the upper atmosphere. When meteoric iron is ablated to form free iron atoms, which can react with ozone (O 3 ) to form FeO. This FeO may be the source of the orange spectrograph band in the upper atmosphere spectrum.
