John Allen Astin (born March 30, 1930) is an American actor who has appeared in many movies and television series, as well as director of television and voice artists. He is especially remembered for starring as Gomez Addams in The Addams Family (1964-1966), repeating roles in the Halloween television show with New Addams Family (1977) and the animated series > The Addams Family (1992-1993). Notable film projects include West Side Story (1961), Mink Touch (1962), Move Over Darling (1963), Freaky Friday (1976), Lampoon European Holiday (1985), Teen Wolf Too (1987) and The Frighteners (1996)). His second wife is actress Patty Duke and she is the adoptive father of Duke's son, actor Sean Astin.
Astin was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for his directorial debut, Short comedy Prelude (1968).

Initial years
Astin was born in Baltimore, Maryland, to Margaret Linnie (nà © Å © e Mackenzie) and Dr. Allen Varley Astin, who is director of the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology). At that time, Astin and his family lived in Battery Lane in Bethesda, Maryland. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1952, after moving from Washington & amp; Jefferson College. He studied mathematics in Washington & amp; Jefferson and later drama at Johns Hopkins; he is a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Johns Hopkins.

Astin started in the theater, making his first appearance on Broadway as a substitute at Major Barbara , and also doing voice-over work for the ad. His first major film in the film came with a small role in West Side Story (1961).

Astin joined retooled The Phyllis Diller Show for the second half of the 1966-1967 season, playing Diller's brother-in-law, Angus Pruitt. He also plays Riddler in the second season of Batman (Frank Gorshin returns for the third and final season.) He plays submarine commander Matthew Sherman on the 1970s television show Operat Petticoat . He also made an important appearance in the popular mystery series Murder, He Wrote , as the evil Sheriff Harry Pierce. She has a recurring role on the sitcom Nightly as Buddy, a former eccentric mental patient and father of the main character Harry Stone. He also played the routine role of Ed LaSalle in Mary Tyler Moore's short-lived sitcom Mary during the 1985-86 season. Astin received an Academy Award nomination for Prelude, a short film he wrote, produced, and directed. She was nominated for an Ace Award for her work on Tales from the Crypt , and received an Emmy Award nomination for the Gomez cartoon voice on ABC-TV The Addams Family . He also voiced the character of Bull Gator in the animated series Taz-Mania . Astin served for four years on the board of directors of Writer Guild of America, and has been active in community affairs in Los Angeles and Santa Monica.
He continues to work in acting, appearing in a series of Killer Tomatoes movies as Professor Gangreen and as Professor Wickwire at The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. . In 1996 he appeared as The Judge, the ghost of a Old West gunslinger, at Peter Jackson's
Astin serves as a member on the board of directors for Columbia Theater Arts Center.
Teach
Astin currently teaches both acting and directing in the Arts Theater and Studies Department at Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater. Commenting on his double career, he said in 2007, "I do not know of any major university that has an actor known to teach every day." He hopes to rebuild the university drama department, noting that he is one of only a handful to get a drama degree from Hopkins. Astin can be seen singing and playing cowbell in a music video from JHU released in December 2009.
Personal life
Astin has five sons; three (David, Allen and Tom) with his first wife, Suzanne Hahn; two with his second wife, actress Patty Duke - who was adopted (Sean, son of Patty from a previous relationship, which John adopted after their marriage) and a biological one (Mackenzie). Astin is currently married to Valerie Ann Sandobal and lives in Baltimore. He practiced Nichiren Buddhism as a member of the Soka Gakkai International Buddhist association.
