Freeze Jet Dry Ice Blasting Machine - YouTube
src: i.ytimg.com

Ice blasting (or ice-ice detonation, frozen ice detonation, ice detonation) is a non-abrasive blasting form in which frozen water particles are combined with compressed air and pushed to the surface to be cleaned. aim. Blasting can be done in various media. An alternative method of non-abrasive blasting is dry ice blasting using frozen CO2. Other forms of abrasive blasting use media such as sand, plastic beads, and baking soda.

Histori

"Means and methods for cleaning and polishing cars" patented in 1955 (US Pat. 2699403). The explosive medium is dry ice pelletization and hence this process is known as dry ice blasting or CO2 blasting. Ice Blast's interest was updated in the late 80's as evidenced by the various patents filed on the subject. This technology is based on the addition of cryogenic features in the natural progression of sand blasting. Without a proper understanding of the nature of static and dynamic ice particles, such implementations always lead to agglomeration of ice particles and subsequent ice blockages.

In 1995 Universal Ice Blast, Inc. established for the purpose of developing and marketing patent blasting equipment held by his patents. The company designs, assembles and sells its equipment and provides ice blasting and equipment rental services. The company creates environmentally friendly solutions for industrial cleaning needs. UIB holds four patents two of which were issued in 1999, one issued in 2001 and one issued in 2003. These patents include methods and equipment for the manufacture, transportation, and delivery of ice particles continuously to a nozzle for explosion ice continuously. cleaning work on various surfaces.

In 2012, Coulson Group of Companies acquired Universal Ice Blast and embarked on the reorganization and upgrading of UIB technology, which took several years. In March 2015, the company was relaunched and re-branded as Coulson Ice Blast. The Coulson Ice Blast team is a group of specialized industry experts to serve a variety of industries and educate customers about the benefits of enhanced explosion ice technology. Unlike previous iterations Coulson Ice Blast's IceStorm90 technology uses a much more efficient hose system and breaks ice cubes instead of making its own ice, making it a much smaller machine.

Method

Abrasive blasting is the process of influencing projectiles such as sand or plastic grains to erode the surface material. If the abrasive media hardness is higher than the substrate, the substrate surface may be damaged. Ice blasting is a non-abrasive cleaning process that uses frozen water particles as a smoothing medium on impact to prevent damage to the substrate. The most effective blasting ice-cleaning application uses consistent-sized particles to provide a uniform cleaning effect. The ice particles are combined with compressed air and directed to the surface.

The cleaning method used in ice blasting falls under three steps:

  • Bulk Deletes: The stage at which the primary contamination is removed first. Usually this is physical removal with displacement (ie the transfer of Momentum). Therefore, this step should be achieved with materials that transfer their momentum efficiently to contamination. The solids have better momentum displacements than liquids because they do not flow around the inherent contamination.
  • Cleaning Details: Stages in which some forms of mechanical agitation such as scrubbing or polishing are provided to remove residual contamination from the surface. By definition, scrubbing means two solids move relative to each other under applied pressure. Water as an explosive cleaning agent can not therefore offer this property.
  • Last Wash: Disposable contamination is rinsed. Water is the universal solvent for this action. Many alternatives for ice blasting require additional rinse on top of the blasting action.

This leads to the natural conclusion that the icy particles that change the state from solid to liquid at normal working temperatures are ideal for cleaning applications where strict hygiene is required and at the same time the use of cleaning chemicals is undesirable. The ice particles provide impact cleaning before the phase change, which then rubs and removes contaminants, which can be easily collected and removed. The ice particles will melt into the water and some of the water will experience forced evaporation arising from the explosion air movement. In warm climates, complete evaporation can occur, leaving only wet blast debris. This aspect of ice is very attractive to those concerned with the generation and disposal of waste, especially in the cleaning of hazardous chemicals. Minimization of waste is also important for the cleaning of industrial spaces where floor channels are not common.

Tools

Coulson Ice Blast's new IceStorm90 contains an ice crusher inside the machine, allowing users to insert ice into the jaw crusher. The jaw-crushing mechanism then breaks the ice into particles slightly smaller than a grain of rice, which is then destroyed through a nozzle with an operating pressure of 80PSI-150PSI depending on the application. The feed rate on the engine can be adjusted from 0-5 pounds of ice per minute with up to 150 feet blasting hose.

Apps

Ice blasting can be used to clean many different surfaces effectively and have applications in many industries. It has an appeal due to minimal water usage and the absence of chemicals to provide environmentally-friendly cleaning solutions. In addition, blasting ice does not damage the surface being cleaned.

Removal of paint/Abestos lead

In stripping the paint, ice blasting is used to overcome the cohesive bonding of the coating. Depending on the paint or the arrangement of the bonds, some layers can not be cleaned. Ice blasting is very useful in removing lead paint, because it poses the least danger. Ice blasting has the lowest air contaminant level for blasting technology in removal of lead paint. The ice particles produce an explosive mist, which helps suppress dust or particles in the air to minimize unwanted dispersion. The characteristic of this ice blast has a particular interest in the health and safety of workers in the process of reducing lead-based asbestos and paints.

Printout

Ice blasting technology enables comprehensive and efficient cleaning of molds in various industries, including tire manufacturing, automotive production, and packaging plants. Because the method is non-abrasive, cleaning will not damage the mold surface. Ice blasting can be used on hot or cold molds, reducing downtime at production facilities. Ice is thinning at impact, so the explosive media trap is not a concern. Grit plundering is the reason abrasive media such as sand can not be used for cleaning online.

Deburring

In some applications, material removal is achieved without abrasion. This is very common in the deletion of fine spines arising from aluminum engines such as automatic transmission components, and small flashing of casting. In this situation, the metal is loosely attached to the parent metal and therefore can be easily removed by the momentum of the explosive agent. No abrasive erosion occurs because the remaining metal does not show smooth or rounded edges.

Oil/Fat

Pressure brushed ice particles can reach 300 bar. In many applications in the removal of oils and fats, ice blasting can essentially produce an oil-free surface. In some metal finishing operations, ice explosions have been shown to be superior to conventional acid preservation.

Rust

Ice blast is not abrasive. It does not remove the hard coat attached strongly as the media will be abrasive. However, ice explosions can eliminate coating with weakened adhesion due to coating or corrosion defects. As the ice particles impact on the layer, it causes pressure press on the layer and the target system. On impact, ice particles melt. The layers and target system under pressure press will react in the opposite direction, producing a tensile stress. When the tensile stress exceeds the adhesion strength of the layer, there is the removal of the layer. The raised layer is within the strength of the chip and will be carried by the waste water.

Other Use

Ice blasting has applications in many other industries and is a solution for companies that value effective water use, low environmental impact, and low cost. This technology has been used for aerospace, chemical removal, nuclear decontamination, and city cleaning.

Security

As with all blasting technologies, proper sunglasses and ear protection are recommended, as the blasting machine reaches the level of 115 db. Depending on the contaminants being cleared, the level of protection varies. Ice blasting is the safest method for blasting technology because of the lack of air pollution that is consistent with other blasting technologies. Generally, light rain equipment is adequate protection. If ice blasting is used to clean hazardous materials, heavier protective clothing is recommended.
